Melanie Jensen

Job Title Associate Occupational Hygiene and Safety Manager

Company Boeing Hawker de Havilland

Melanie wanted to be a vet in a high school but it's just as well she liked chemistry because as an alternative she started studying the Applied Chemistry course at RMIT really loved it, and stayed.

Melanie also completed a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hygiene to qualify as an Occupational Health and Safety professional – something she says she could not have done successfully without her chemistry degree - and now finds herself more involved in the chemistry/science management side of things. In fact Melanie's position includes;

  • risk assessment of chemical and hazardous substances, dangerous goods, plants and manual handling
  • Occupational Hygiene monitoring of noise, dust (respirable and total), asbestos and silica, ionizing radiation, chemicals and hazardous substances, confined space entry, ventilation and air quality and biological monitoring
  • project management of the implementation of company strategies and goals and emergency response management
  • communication and training in the areas of behavioural based safety systems, risk assessment, personal protective equipment, monitoring and analytical equipment and hazard awareness

The position is also a lot more people oriented than traditional chemical laboratory work.

One of the more ‘interesting' experience's Melanie has had in her career was at the Esso plant in Longford. Melanie actually left the plant only 20 minutes before the infamous explosion but continued to work there for two years afterwards. The experience really affirmed Melanie's passion for health and safety in the workplace.

Presently, Melanie is very enthusiastic about continuing to her in job and offers this advice to prospective chemistry students,

“I love being a chemist and I love where (my degree) has taken me. It is very important to get a good foundation before specializing.”
