Dr Matthew Grigg Job Title: Mass Spectrometry Application Scientist Company: Applied Biosystems City of Residence: Singapore Year Graduated: BSc(Hons) 1996, PhD 2000 Matthew talks about being a Mass Spectrometry Application Scientist My day to day role includes a range of responsibilities. I help customers of Applied Biosystems fine tune and optimize their experiments and this calls on my skills as a scientist. Customer applications range from pharmaceutical analysis, environmental testing, food safety testing, forensic analysis to protein identification and characterisation. The best aspect about this type of role is the ability to interface and work with researchers from such a broad range of application areas. Another day might have me working closely with our sales organisation to advise new customers as to the configurations and experimental design most applicable to their experimental aim. I guess in this role I could be considered a consultant, and sometimes this would include public speaking events where I present experimental results achieved with Applied Biosystems instrumentation. Though my current role is based in Singapore I do travel extensively throughout both new and established labs. South East Asia visits to labs in Thailand , Vietnam , Malaysia and Hong Kong are quite frequent but I also visit labs throughout China , USA and Europe from time to time. On the whole I have found that my broad undergraduate subject exposure such as Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Analytical and Organic Chemistry are all drawn on from time to time. I have been working in Asia for 5 years now which has been a wonderful experience. Go to the University of Melbourne School of Chemistry homepage |
